New BAC Mono Supercar Debuts: Lighter, More Powerful Track Weapon

BAC has unveiled the latest evolution of its Mono track-focused machine, a vehicle that, even after more than a decade on the market, continues to challenge the performance of the world’s fastest Bac Supercar models. While it might visually resemble its predecessor, BAC’s engineers have meticulously redesigned the car, making significant changes throughout to enhance its capabilities and maintain its competitive edge in the high-performance vehicle segment.

The new BAC Mono is essentially a refined version, detuned slightly from the extreme Mono R, yet still inheriting much of its groundbreaking technology. This includes more aerodynamic bodywork at the front, a larger rear wing, and an updated diffuser. The lightweight construction utilizes clever graphene-infused carbon fibre panels. Inside, the cockpit sees revisions with a racing-style steering wheel and updated switchgear, further emphasizing its track pedigree. Beyond the aesthetics and interior, BAC has implemented a host of mechanical modifications aimed at improving the car’s dynamic performance and handling characteristics.

Powering the new Mono is a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, expertly tuned by Mountune Racing. This potent unit is packed with high-performance internal components, including forged connecting rods, forged pistons, heavy-duty camshafts, robust valve springs, and a completely new induction system featuring sought-after individual throttle bodies. This configuration not only contributes to the engine’s performance but also delivers an exhilarating soundtrack, a detail appreciated by driving enthusiasts.

The result of Mountune’s work is a reliable output of 311 bhp and 231 lb ft of torque. While these figures might not be the highest in the Bac Supercar category or compared to hypercars, the Mono’s true strength lies in its extraordinary power-to-weight ratio. BAC has successfully maintained this crucial advantage in the new model.

Weighing a mere 570 kg, the new Mono boasts a staggering power-to-weight ratio of 546 bhp per tonne. To put this into perspective, the 1000 bhp V12 hybrid Lamborghini Revuelto has a power-to-weight ratio of 564 bhp per tonne. Despite having less than half the horsepower, the lightweight Mono is incredibly agile and quick, capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.7 seconds, placing it firmly in contention with much more powerful and expensive machines. This incredible performance for its price point positions it uniquely among high-performance vehicles. Chassis and Handling Enhancements

BAC has also made significant revisions to the Mono’s suspension geometry. The company reports a 50 percent reduction in pitch under braking and a 50 percent reduction in squat under hard acceleration. These improvements are designed to make the car’s handling on the track more neutral and predictable, allowing drivers to push closer to the limit with confidence. Weight distribution is a key factor in this stability, with the Mono featuring a rear-biased split of 41:59 front to rear, similar to the setup found in Formula 1 cars.

The suspension system offers full adjustability, allowing owners to fine-tune the ride and handling characteristics to suit specific road conditions or track layouts. Additionally, buyers have a choice of tyres, including a specially developed Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R compound available in both slick and wet tread patterns, offering optimized grip for various conditions encountered while supercars racing.

BAC also has future plans for the updated Mono. A turbocharged version is slated for launch next year. This model will utilize a tuned 2.3-litre four-cylinder unit, potentially related to the engine found in the entry-level new ford supercar variants. This turbocharged variant is expected to be a significant development for European customers as it is designed to meet Euro 6 emissions standards, finally making the Mono road legal in many regions where it previously was not.

Neill Briggs, co-founder of BAC, commented on the new model’s significance: ‘Mono is an authentic bac supercar – it delivers the typical – yet not easily achievable – attributes that are part of the BAC DNA like high-performance, lightweight engineering, dynamic chassis, optimised suspension and an emotional design.’ He added that the new car creates ‘a connection to a new type of BAC driving experience, one that can seamlessly take to the road as easily as it can encounter the demands of on-track driving.’ Briggs views the new Mono as a ‘homage to the original BAC Concept that we established over a decade ago, proving its fundamental longevity.’

Pricing and Market Response

The new BAC Mono commands a premium price, starting at around £215,000. However, BAC justifies this cost by emphasizing that buyers receive performance capabilities typically associated with hypercars for a price closer to that of a high-end supercar. This value proposition was recently demonstrated at the Anglesey Circuit in Wales, where the slightly more powerful Mono R variant set a new outright lap record, cutting three to five seconds off the lap times of established hypercars like the Ferrari SF90 and McLaren 765 LT.

Despite the price, BAC does not appear concerned about demand. Chris Lockhart, BAC’s head of global sales, confirmed that demand for this new bac supercar has been unprecedented. He stated that orders were already being taken for the Mono even before its official unveiling, with the first customer delivery scheduled immediately following the launch event.

BAC’s Exploration of Alternative Fuels

Prior to launching the updated Mono, BAC also ventured into the realm of alternative fuels. In 2022, the company collaborated with Viritech to develop a hydrogen fuel cell-powered version of the Mono. This project aimed to explore the potential of hydrogen technology in high-performance sports cars and advance its adoption. However, this hydrogen initiative has been temporarily set aside.

The prototype was developed during a period when BAC anticipated tighter emissions regulations that could potentially threaten the viability of its petrol-powered vehicles. The company was proactively exploring ways to adapt and remain relevant. However, recent changes to emissions legislation mean that the strictest rules now apply only to manufacturers producing more than 1000 cars annually. As BAC’s production volumes remain significantly lower, a company spokesperson confirmed that BAC will continue to focus on petrol power for the foreseeable future, a decision likely welcomed by purists.

The hydrogen project, while currently paused, was a valuable learning experience. It presented BAC with the challenge of maintaining the petrol Mono’s renowned sharp driving dynamics while managing the additional weight and complexity of a hydrogen fuel cell system and the necessary electronic components. Neill Briggs reiterated BAC’s commitment to innovation, stating: ‘Technology has always been at the forefront of our development, and we remain committed to exploring new automotive innovations within all that we do.’ He emphasized that exploring alternative fuels and lightweight construction methods reduces emissions without compromising the critical element of driver engagement, which BAC is dedicated to preserving. This continuous exploration of technology ensures BAC remains at the cutting edge of high-performance vehicle development, whether focusing on current models or future possibilities like those seen in the 2023 supercars camaro and other performance vehicles.
