I thought September was a fantastic time to visit this stunning national park, despite being towards the end of the main visitor season. There were significantly fewer crowds, which made the experience feel more remote and pristine. The cool temperatures were still comfortable for outdoor activities and boat tours, not yet reaching the deep cold of winter. Critically, the incredible wildlife like whales (including humpbacks and orcas) and sea otters remained active and visible before migrating further south. The alpine tundra began to glow with beautiful fall colors – reds, oranges, and yellows painting the hillsides. It was also one of the last accessible chances of the year to take a boat tour right up to the face of the impressive tidewater glaciers before winter conditions made many parts of the park inaccessible.

I flew into Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, then took the scenic Alaska Railroad train three hours south to Seward, the charming port town that serves as the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park. I spent five extraordinary days based in Seward. Highlights included cruising past the towering Holgate and Aialik tidewater glaciers, watching massive chunks of ice calve into the water, and spotting an abundance of marine wildlife including sea otters, puffins, and even magnificent humpback whales.

Beyond the boat tours, I also managed to hike part of the breathtaking Harding Icefield Trail, which offers panoramic views of a vast icefield that is the source of numerous glaciers. I kayaked through icy fjords, providing an incredible up-close look at the glacier fronts and ice floes. When I visited this dramatic protected park in southern Utah in mid-September, I found it to be an absolutely perfect time. The temperatures were still warm during the day but significantly more comfortable (and safer!) for strenuous activities like hiking compared to the scorching summer heat. The crowds had thinned out considerably compared to the peak season months of summer and spring break, making iconic trails much more manageable. Early hints of fall color had begun to tint the vegetation against the stunning red rock landscapes – think golden cottonwoods along the river – creating incredible photographic opportunities. It was an ideal time for both adventure and photography without the peak-season intensity.

I flew into Las Vegas for a weekend of fun, then drove the easy three hours northeast to the park’s main entrance in Springdale, Utah. I spent an extraordinary three days fully exploring Zion. I was able to hike world-famous, bucket-list trails like Angels Landing (with the necessary permit) and The Narrows (wading through the Virgin River canyon) in cooler, less crowded conditions than are typical in summer. I spotted those beautiful early fall colors along the Emerald Pools Trail, joined interesting ranger-led programs to learn about the park’s geology and ecology, and enjoyed superb scenic drives through the main Zion Canyon and the less-visited Kolob Canyons section of the park, all without the oppressive summer heat. This is where I spent a truly dreamy, warm fall break. I discovered firsthand that September was an absolutely incredible time to visit this rugged, remote, and stunningly beautiful stretch of Kauai’s north shore. The weather was consistently warm and dry, perfect for enjoying the outdoors. Crucially, the ocean conditions were typically calm during September, making it an ideal month for exploring the coast via boat tours, kayaking, or paddleboarding. Hiking trails like the famous Kalalau Trail were lush, accessible, and less muddy than during the wetter winter months.

Furthermore, with fewer tourists around compared to the peak summer season, I was able to truly enjoy the Na Pali Coast’s breathtaking cliffs, hidden beaches, and dramatic scenery in relative peace and solitude. I also got to attend the lively Kauaʻi Mokihana Festival, a week-long celebration of Hawaiian culture, music, and hula held in late September, adding a wonderful cultural element to my trip.

I flew into Lihue Airport (LIH) on Kauai’s east side and stayed for an idyllic 10 days at the beautiful 4-star Hanalei Colony Resort on the north shore, perfectly positioned for exploring the Na Pali Coast. I spent significant time enjoying the calmer ocean conditions on various boat and kayaking tours that departed from nearby harbors, offering unparalleled views of the coastline. I also hiked the scenic Kalalau Trail for the initial two miles to reach the beautiful Hanakāpīʻai Falls, took a thrilling helicopter tour for incredible aerial views of the entire coast (highly recommended!), and enjoyed snorkeling at Nualolo Kai and Tunnels Beach with fewer crowds and wonderfully clear water. For anyone wondering should i use a travel agent for hawaii, especially for a complex trip like exploring Kauai’s remote Na Pali Coast, getting expert advice might be a good idea, but September is definitely a prime time to go.

I took a delightful trip to this historic coastal town in South Carolina during September and found it to be a fantastic time to visit. The intense summer heat and humidity had significantly eased, and the large summer crowds that flock to the coast had dissipated, creating a much more relaxed atmosphere. The weather was still beautifully warm during the day, with pleasant breezes, making it perfect for enjoying waterfront strolls, exploring the historic district, and engaging in various outdoor activities without discomfort. I also found some great off-peak deals on accommodation, offering better value for the charming experience.

I flew into Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, which is about a 45-minute drive from Beaufort, and stayed for a very charming five days. I chose the gorgeous 4-star historic boutique Rhett House Inn, a perfect base for soaking up the Southern ambiance. I spent my days strolling through Beaufort’s incredibly picturesque historic district, filled with stunning antebellum homes and iconic live oaks draped in Spanish moss. I kayaked through the eerily still and beautiful waters of the Spanish Moss Trail and explored Hunting Island State Park, a nearby barrier island with pristine beaches and a historic lighthouse. I also enjoyed an awesome dolphin-spotting tour on the waterways and made sure to gorge on hearty, delicious Southern cuisine at the waterfront restaurants overlooking the Beaufort River.

18. Saugatuck – Douglas, Michigan

I thought September was the perfect time to explore this small and scenic lakeside city and its twin village Douglas on the shores of Lake Michigan. The peak summer crowds that flock here for the beaches and arts scene had long dispersed, leaving a much more relaxed and local atmosphere. The weather was still wonderfully pleasant and warm during the day, perfect for enjoying outdoor activities by the lake, while evenings had a lovely crispness. Early fall colors added a cozy, small-town charm to the already picturesque setting, truly turning it into a peaceful and low-key lakeside getaway before the colder weather set in.

Beyond the lovely ambiance, there were also some really buzzy events happening in September that added to the town’s appeal. I really enjoyed attending the cultural Saugatuck Art in the Park, showcasing local artists, the cool Saugatuck Film Fest, attracting independent cinema lovers, and the fun Lakeshore Harvest Ride, a popular cycling event that explores the scenic countryside during the harvest season.

I drove about 2.5 hours from Chicago to reach Saugatuck/Douglas and stayed for a long weekend. I enjoyed just kicking back and relaxing on the beautiful sands of Oval Beach, considered one of the best freshwater beaches in the USA. I climbed the iconic Mount Baldhead, a large sand dune, where I was in awe at the incredibly Insta-worthy panoramic views of Lake Michigan and the Kalamazoo River. I also took a ride on the historic Chain Ferry across the Kalamazoo River, a unique hand-cranked ferry, and gazed at the early fall colors starting to appear on the trees during a Saugatuck Dune Ride adventure over the massive sand dunes.

I thought this small, historic mining town in the Idaho Panhandle made a wonderful and unique place to kick off a fall mini-break. During my trip in September, I found the temperatures were still pleasantly mild during the day, perfect for exploring the outdoors and the town. The skies were often clear – September is typically one of the drier months in this region – which offered great visibility. The early fall colors had just started to appear on the surrounding hillsides, adding a subtle beauty to the landscape. I also loved the advantage of off-season prices for accommodation and activities, the much quieter pace of life compared to summer, and the cozy vibe that began to set in just before the arrival of winter.

I flew into Spokane International Airport (GEG) in Washington, which is about a 90-minute drive east across the border into Idaho and Wallace. I stayed for a unique and memorable long weekend. A highlight was biking a section of the incredibly scenic Route of the Hiawatha, a converted rail trail that goes through tunnels and over trestles (see highlight below!). I also took a tour of the interesting underground Sierra Silver Mine, learning about the town’s rich mining history. I spent time exploring Wallace’s charming historic district, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and feels like stepping back in time. Browsing for cool vintage finds at the very hip Under the Freeway Flea Market, held underneath the elevated section of I-90, was also a fun experience.

20. Dauphin Island, Alabama

I thoroughly enjoyed a hot and sunny fall vacation on this charming small barrier island located off the coast of Alabama in the Gulf of Mexico. Visiting Dauphin Island in September was a great choice for several reasons. I found the Gulf waters were still wonderfully warm, perfect for swimming and enjoying the beach. The weather was consistently pleasant, warm during the day but often accompanied by a refreshing breeze coming off the water, making it much more comfortable than the peak summer heat. The summer crowds had noticeably faded after Labor Day, leaving the beaches and island feeling peaceful and uncrowded. Additionally, September is a prime time for bird migration, and the Audubon Bird Sanctuary on the island was bustling with activity, offering fantastic bird-watching opportunities.

There were also some awesome local festivals happening on the island during September, adding to the fun, laid-back atmosphere. These included the family-friendly and lively historical reenactment, the Massacre Island Pirate Invasion, and The Headless Pirate of Dauphin Island, which was an entertaining dinner theater experience held at the Dauphin Island Community Center.

I flew into Mobile Regional Airport (MOB) and then drove about 50 minutes south on AL-193, crossing the scenic Gordon Persons Bridge to reach Dauphin Island. I stayed for a dreamy, relaxing week. I spent time spotting pretty migrating birds at the renowned Audubon Bird Sanctuary, explored the historic Fort Gaines at the island’s eastern tip, relaxed for hours on the quiet Gulf beaches, and enjoyed kayaking in the picturesque Pelican Bay, a sheltered area perfect for paddling. Gorging on fresh local seafood at the island’s casual restaurants was also a highlight.
