Reliving the Rally: Ford GTs, a GT350R, and the Spirit of Old American Muscle

In August of 2017, the scenic landscape of Park City, Utah, became the vibrant backdrop for the 12th gathering of Ford GTs and their passionate owners. This particular event marked a significant milestone, being the first rally to feature both the original 2005-2006 Ford GT models alongside the newer generation. As a long-time enthusiast and owner of a 2005 Ford GT, I had every intention of participating by driving my own car, much like the road trip I’d completed just four months prior for the new Ford GT press launch. For enthusiasts who appreciate iconic Ford performance, witnessing the evolution from classic machines, perhaps even reminiscing about a legendary Ford Mustang Gt500 Old model, to modern marvels was a unique experience.

Unfortunately, a sudden shift in my schedule meant I couldn’t spare the two extra days required for the drive to and from Utah. Faced with the prospect of flying and being stuck in a generic rental car while trailing a magnificent fleet of GTs through the mountains, an idea sparked. What if I could get my hands on a newer performance Ford? Specifically, I hadn’t yet had the chance to drive a Shelby GT350R. Showcasing this track-focused Mustang at an event filled with high-performance Ford owners seemed like a perfect opportunity, connecting the rally experience to the broader world of potent American vehicles, including nice old muscle cars that share a similar performance heritage.

My proposal to Ford was successful. They generously agreed to ship a 2017 Shelby GT350R to the St. Regis resort in Park City, the rally’s host location. Arriving on the first night, I was greeted by a stunning Lightning Blue Shelby GT350R, accented with bold Black racing stripes, waiting in the parking lot. I had heard glowing reports about the GT350R since its debut in 2016, and by the end of the rally, I could confirm that the praise was entirely justified.

The Ford GT Owners Rally Experience

The rally itself was a spectacular display. With over 80 Ford GTs, representing both the classic 2005-2006 models and the contemporary second generation, navigating the mountain roads of Utah, it created an unforgettable spectacle for attendees and locals alike. The weather was nearly perfect, complementing the visual feast of these high-performance machines set against the stunning Rocky Mountains. Witnessing this assembly, one couldn’t help but think about the lineage of powerful American cars, a history that includes legends like old american muscle icons.

Seeing both generations of the Ford GT side-by-side, and especially in motion, vividly highlighted their distinct design philosophies. The 2005-2006 Ford GT boasts a timeless, classic silhouette that remains perpetually stylish. In contrast, the new Ford GT appears almost otherworldly, resembling a futuristic, low-slung craft from the 22nd century. One represents enduring style, the other pure, purposeful design, yet both are undeniably visually stunning and represent peak Ford performance from their respective eras. Comparing them offers insight into how Ford’s approach to high-performance vehicles has evolved over time, a journey that also includes significant models like the ford mustang shelby gt500 old model.

I had the good fortune to experience a ride-along with Andy, a fellow second-generation GT owner, in his black 2005 Ford GT. Andy, being a professional racer, possesses an expert understanding of how to extract the maximum performance from any car. His Ford GT, equipped with strategic upgrades including Hoosier R7 tires, Scott Ahlman shocks for enhanced suspension, and Pagid Yellow brake pads, was exceptionally capable on the track. The ride with Andy was genuinely one of the most entertaining automotive experiences I’ve ever had, highlighting the potent performance potential of these classic Ford machines, a trait also sought after by those looking for cheap project muscle cars to restore.
